Strike Hockey Academy, An Inspiration

A new wave of enthusiasm is sweeping through Lautoka’s hockey community with the launch of the Strike Hockey Academy — an initiative designed to nurture young talent and revive interest in the sport from the grassroots level.

Formed earlier this year, the academy targets primary and secondary school students as well as young players who show interest in learning the game. Its mission is simple but powerful — to develop the skills of future field hockey players and prepare them to compete in local club competitions, represent their districts, and one day wear the Fiji jersey.

The academy is the brainchild of former Lautoka, Suva, and Fiji representative Kevin Fraser and Norman Smith of Strike Fumigation & Pest Control, also a former player. The acedemy has partnered with Lautoka Hockey Association and  share the vision of creating a structured development pathway for young athletes who might not otherwise have access to quality coaching.

This year, the academy successfully conducted a series of coaching clinics at the five-a-side turf in Lautoka, where children received hands-on training in basic techniques, game awareness, and teamwork. The sessions were led by experienced coaches and former players who volunteered their time to pass on knowledge and inspire confidence in the next generation.

Strike Fumigation, a key partner in the initiative, continues to complement and work closely with the Lautoka Hockey Association in promoting youth development and supporting hockey’s long-term growth in the Western Division.

Academy co-founder Kevin Fraser said the response from children and parents has been encouraging and shows the strong potential for hockey’s revival.

“We want to build a foundation where kids can learn the sport properly, enjoy it, and eventually move into club and representative levels. Hockey has given us a lot over the years — now it’s time we give something back,” he said.

The Strike Hockey Academy represents more than just skill development — it’s about building character, discipline, and a lasting love for the game. With the continued support of its founders, sponsors, and the Lautoka hockey community, the academy hopes to create a strong pipeline of talented young players who can help reignite the spirit of hockey in Fiji.
