Lautoka Hockey Plans Business House Hockey League for 2026/2027 Season

The Lautoka Hockey Association (LHA) is laying the groundwork for a brand-new Business House Hockey League, set to debut in either the 2026 or 2027 season. This initiative aims to bring together corporate teams from across the Sugar City and beyond, boosting community engagement, promoting workplace wellness and reviving interest in the sport at the grassroots level.

The league is designed to attract major corporate houses, many of whom have shown interest in past sports events in Lautoka. Early indications suggest that organisations such as Punjas, FMF, FNPF, FRCS, Fiji Gas, Fiji Water, FSC, Strike Fumigation & Pest Control, Tropik Wood and several others may be keen to participate. LHA believes such corporate involvement will not only lift the profile of the competition but also create a vibrant after-hours sporting environment for employees across the district.

Sponsorship Drive Begins

To move the project forward, LHA will soon be reaching out to business houses, calling for Expressions of Interest and seeking sponsorship partners for the league. The Association plans to present participating organisations with detailed information on the competition format, schedules, sponsorship opportunities and branding benefits.

LHA officials have expressed optimism about securing strong corporate backing, noting that the league aligns well with many companies’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, especially those focused on staff health, wellbeing and team-building.

Boosting Community Interest and Player Participation

LHA believes the Business House Hockey League will create a positive ripple effect for the sport in Lautoka. Corporate tournaments are known to draw strong community interest, and the Association hopes this competition will introduce new players to hockey, reconnect former players and encourage companies to promote active lifestyles within their workforce.

Increased visibility and participation at the business-house level are expected to filter into the district league competition, helping build a larger player base and strengthening the overall development of hockey in Lautoka.

Exploring Floodlights for Evening Matches

One of the key logistical considerations for the new league is the availability of suitable playing facilities. The current mini turf in Lautoka, which is privately owned, has floodlights, and holding matches in the evening will suit business houses, allowing employees to play after work. This flexibility is expected to attract more organisations and make it possible to schedule additional matches.

Match Format and Player Requirements

The Business House Hockey League will follow a modified format to encourage wider participation and ensure player safety. Each team will field seven players, with two female players compulsory on the field at all times. Teams will also be permitted to field only one elite or experienced hockey player, while the remaining players, male or female, must be employees of the company they represent, apart from the two girls. There is no limit to the number of reserves a team may register. Teams will play 7 minutes each half, making the total game time of 14 minutes. In line with safety guidelines used in Suva’s Business League, no hitting will be allowed, with only slap shots and push passes permitted to minimise risk and maintain a social, inclusive style of play.

A League Designed for Newcomers

Importantly, the Business House Hockey League is designed primarily for non-playing hockey participants, giving first-timers and recreational players an opportunity to enjoy the sport in a fun and supportive environment. The modified rules and relaxed format ensure that employees or players with little or no hockey experience can participate safely while still enjoying the competitive spirit of the league.

A Step Toward Reviving Hockey Culture in the Sugar City

As LHA continues to roll out its long-term vision—including its upcoming strategic plan, grassroots development programs and infrastructure goals—the Business House Hockey League represents another important step forward.

By engaging corporate Fiji, encouraging workplace wellness and creating a fun, competitive platform for adults, LHA is positioning hockey as a sport that unites the community, strengthens partnerships and grows participation from the ground up.

The Association will release further details in the coming months as planning progresses, with hopes that the league will become a permanent fixture in Lautoka’s sporting calendar.
